a bird hung this flagIf you’re on social media, Subscriber First Name, then you probably saw my post this week about prayer flags. Our neighbors are Tibetan. They taught us that prayer flags should always be hung outdoors because the movement of the fabric in the wind is the energy of the prayers being sent out and up. A constant reverberation. We had a string of large flags hanging in our birch tree in the back yard for some years, echoing our neighbors’ multiple garlands. But at one point this summer after stormy weather, the line snapped. I made the discovery after skies cleared, noting the strand of red, green, white, and yellow squares was hanging down to the grass. But where did the blue flag go? I assumed the wind had carried it far away. Jump ahead a few months to this week. The brilliant autumn leaves have almost all fallen to the ground. I was throwing the ball to our big dog when something caught my eye. What was that hanging from a giant nest up by the power lines? THERE IT WAS. The blue flag. I love that this bird (is it the owl I heard the other night?) managed to use the fabric while letting it hang, freely blowing in the breeze. The prayers of a bird, fluttering upward. This brings me such joy. Joy in the little things is so crucial when the big things feel so heavy. I hope you can find some moments of joy in the 34-minute practice this week.
