How amusing that the topic which I recently mentioned is a lesson I re-learned this week: prioritize energy management over time management. It’s actually not even a choice, because your body does this for you. I was so excited about a photo work trip to Boston last week that in true 7 fashion, before leaving, I imagined ALL of the things I would do in my ample free time. (One of these things included editing audio and posting this content. As you can tell by the late sending of this email, that did not happen.) The facts were this: on both ends of the trip, each travel day took an unexpected 12 hours. I had to navigate to a new site each day, two of which required driving a minivan (!) through and beyond the city. The other two sites were walkable, so I carried my gear through the city on foot, but each one had unique Covid protocols, unique people, and unique needs. I could go on, but the point is: a great deal of energy was demanded of me physically and mentally, even though I was doing “normal” things. Though I took care of myself by eating well, meditating, and moving my body, I certainly did not have boatloads of energy to spare. I felt “on” all week. Even today I am continuing to recover from my 3:45am arrival home yesterday morning, which had been precipitated by a 3am hotel alarm going off the night before. What can you do? Energy depletion is valid, no matter how it happens. We’re all energized and depleted in different ways. What’s important is to support yourself in the restoration of energy on a regular basis, and that could happen through movement OR through rest. As for me, I know I need rest.
